It begins in a quiet midwestern town, one summer afternoon in the quiet midwestern future. Away in the big city, people still sometimes glance up hopefully from the sidewalks, glimpsing a distant speck in the sky Superman died ten years ago.
The story is also endowed with a narrator who seems to be denounced as unreliable by some aspects of the framing narrative. The embedded narrative tells us that Superman committed suicide, but that narrative is told to a journalist, ten years after the events, by a now married Lois Lane.
The fact is never explicitly stated, though, only strongly suggested, and this ambiguity makes the story much more than a mere dramatic grand finale for the superhero. The Batman adventures published afterwards were to reinvent the character. His friends and foes successively tell the story of his death, but the cause is never the same in the various stories. Of course, while Alfred tells this story, he is surrounded by the actual villains, who, by their mere presence, invalidate it.
So the two metafictions end up being symbolic opposites, whose metafictional statements fit their respective characters. Fellow English comics-writers Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman were among the main creators who contributed, through the mid and late s and the early s, to the ushering in of the self-reflexive, more complex and multi-layered trends of semi-experimental storytelling and sensitive social awareness that are so pervasive in American popular i.

I hesitate to say anything as I do not wish to spoil it but when the first issue ended, it was a non-traditional cliffhanger and I wanted to know as soon as possible what was going on and I was in tears by the time I got to the end of the second issue..
Also included are a Poison Ivy story as well as a story of reporters from a TV magazine show wanting to do an expose on the costumed villains of Gotham.
Neither of these two stories really have Batman in it but they are both very good. There is also a nice comedic bit about what it is like to be a comic book star that does feature Batman. One person found this helpful. Neil Gaiman has no equal in comic book lore. Product came with cover full of sticky stuff.
This is for my son who is a fan and collector. Had to return, hope replacement comes in good condition. site Edition Verified download. I have to type twenty word or more in this. Neil Gaiman writes the eulogy for Batman. That is it.
If that won't make you download this? Then you either do not know comics. In which case you need to download this to educate you. Or you are poor. In which case you will just torrent this. But put this first in that list.
Only Batman Black and white volume two is better. Hardcover Verified download. Gaiman: [Laughs] Well, the great thing about Batman and Superman, in truth, is that they are literally transcendent. They are better than most of the stories they are in. That's jut Sturgeon's Law : "90 percent of everything is crap. Try to read them and you're looking at , pages, perhaps a million, and you can assume that 90 percent of it is crap. Yet the 10 percent, and even better the 1 percent of that 10 perfect, is absolutely glorious.
That pays for everything.
Sturgeon's Law nails that one nicely. Gaiman: Yeah, it's something that is missed when they're made into movies. With movies, you want that transcendent 10 percent, that mythology. The Iron Man movie fascinated me.
It took a character [at the top of Marvel Comics'] second division, and did him right, so right that everyone goes, "This is why we love Iron Man. Two-Face's riotous ride is one of many hilarious moments dreamed up by Gaiman and rendered by artist Andy Kubert in Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? Photo courtesy DC ComicsWired.
That thing ruled. Gaiman: Two-Face's car! We had too much fun with that. That's that kind of stuff that we could have done forever. Twenty pages of bad guys riding in their cars.
Iceman pulling up in an Icemobile. Same goes with the poor guy who had to watch after them, wondering whether he's going to die with each new customer!
Is The Sandman next? But the truth is, if anybody is going to make a Sandman movie, it will probably be a kid in film school right now to whom The Sandman was the most important thing ever. It will take the amount of commitment, dedication and madness that Peter Jackson brought to Lord of the Rings to get it on the screen. Honestly, it could happen after I am dead.
That one seems unfilmable for a variety of reasons, if only that no one seems quite ready to see an old Batman on screen. Gaiman: That one is interesting. Once it was published, there was all this talk about whether Clint Eastwood could do it. It probably would have been awesome. Alan Moore's epochal Watchmen made the jump to the big screen, but with injuries. Image courtesy DC ComicsWired. Gaiman: I waited on Watchmen because I was also waiting for someone whose opinion I trusted to tell me to go see it.
And they didn't. They told me that I'd love the opening sequence, or that even without the squid it worked, and onward. But after three or four of those, I just said, "Why? That's a different thing than Dark Knight Returns, where the details of the story are more malleable and simple.
Batman comes out of retirement. Cute Robin arrives on the scene. Joker kills himself. Is Batman dead or not? He's not. There's not much to unpack.
The Story – Batman – Whatever Happened To the Caped Crusader (The Deluxe Edition) (2010)
Gaiman: And because it's not film-shaped. I had a meeting two-and-a-half years ago at Warner's with Alan Horn and Jeff Robinov about the status of The Sandman, because they really didn't understand the thing and directors were asking if they could make it.
So I went out to Hollywood with beautiful artwork and toys and did a presentation, talked them through the storyline. We talked about what it was and who the characters were, and how you could do it in three, four or seven movies.Fellow English comics-writers Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman were among the main creators who contributed, through the mid and late s and the early s, to the ushering in of the self-reflexive, more complex and multi-layered trends of semi-experimental storytelling and sensitive social awareness that are so pervasive in American popular i.
The example of Lost Girls was therefore already partly accessible in print before the end of the series. He also wrote, among other examples, three different versions of the legend of Beowulf, and a book for children based on Norse myths.
There was definitely a wonderful joy of writing those last 10 pages of the second issue. Nevertheless, one cannot speak of influence in literature, in philosophy, or even in scientific research, if one does not place an X at the top of the triangle. X is Philip Jose Farmer.
